2027 Vinculum No. 81

Since 1974, Vinculum has showcased the creativity, skill, and diversity of AHP members’ printing. Each edition becomes part of New Zealand’s printmaking record, with copies held in major archival collections including Auckland War Memorial Museum, MOTAT’s Walsh Library, the Hocken Collection, and the Alexander Turnbull Library.

VINCULUM 81 will be published in March 2027, and members are invited to contribute work responding to the theme Borders. Whether approached through history, technique, design, typography, geography, politics, identity, or personal interpretation, the theme offers broad scope for creative exploration.

Letterpress remains at the heart of Vinculum, with other relief printing methods welcome where appropriate.

Please download the Invitation for full details on how to participate.

Expression of Intent Deadline: Thursday 31 December 2026

Please contact Terrie Reddish at imprimo@terrie-reddish.co.nz to register your intention to contribute and to advise your preferred format for receiving the completed collection.

Our By Invitation Only pathway pairs newer printers with experienced operators so they can design and print their month together on a capable press. All participants and AHP members will be sent a copy of the finished Calendar in time for the new year.

Past events:

2026 Wayzgoose in Whanganui

The AHP hosted Wayzgoose 2026 was a roaring success from start to finish, bringing together handcraft printers, bookbinders, artists, and friends from across Aotearoa for a memorable celebration of our crafts, community, and shared passion.

A huge thank you goes to everyone who attended, presented, volunteered, exhibited, and helped make the event such an enjoyable and enriching experience. The enthusiasm, generosity, and creativity on display made this year’s gathering one to remember.

A particular highlight was the discovery of a photograph from the last Wayzgoose held in Whanganui, dating from 1930. Unearthed by the curator at the Whanganui Regional Museum, it proved a wonderful and unexpected connection to the rich history of printers’ gatherings in New Zealand.

Participants at the Whanganui Wayzgoose combined printers social gathering, 1930. Photograph kindly brought to our attention by the curator of the Whanganui Regional Museum.

With the event now concluded, AHP is delighted to hand the baton back to ABC, who will host the next Wayzgoose in 2027. While details are still under wraps, we’ve heard a rumour that the next gathering may be heading to “the mainland” in Te Waipounamu, the South Island.

Watch this space for future announcements, and thank you once again to everyone who helped make Wayzgoose 2026 such a success.

Print Swap

Fifteen letterpress printers accepted the challenge of creating a print inspired by the theme Stars for the inaugural Invitational Print Swap. The images below showcase the resulting collection, reflecting the creativity, skill and diversity of contemporary letterpress printing.

The prints will be on public display for one day only, on Saturday 20 September at the Whanganui Regional Museum, before being auctioned in small bundles at the Wayzgoose Dinner that evening. This is a rare opportunity to view the complete collection together before the works find new homes. ✨

All Sorts

A members' place for news, small stories, opportunities, and the practical things that keep our community connected. It will also include a space for members who want to buy, sell, or rehome equipment, type, or materials, so if you have something to list or an idea to contribute, please get in touch.

Vinculum

Since 1974, Vinculum has showcased the creativity, skill and diversity of Association of Handcraft Printers members. Each contributor submits a printed A5 sheet of their own design, which is gathered with others into a collaborative publication that celebrates contemporary letterpress and handcraft printing in New Zealand.

The name Vinculum comes from the Latin word meaning "a bond", "link" or "tie", reflecting the publication's origins as a means of connecting printers, sharing ideas and encouraging excellence in the craft. Vinculum predates the Association's current name and remains one of its most enduring traditions.

Copies are distributed to contributors and preserved in major library and museum collections, ensuring that Vinculum continues to connect printers while documenting and celebrating their work for future generations.
